About the East Midlands
An Introduction
The East Midlands is England's fourth largest region, positioned right in the middle of the country. It includes the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. It has world world-class attractions like The Peak District National Park, Sherwood Forest, Lincoln Cathedral, Chatsworth House, Silverstone motor racing circuit and The National Space Centre.
Our economy is diverse with world-leading companies in markets including electronics, engineering, pharmaceuticals and food & drink. And we have eight leading universities, many of which are world renowned for their excellent research.
It's not all about work though. East Midlanders enjoy an excellent quality of life coupled with a low cost of living. We have a wealth of activities for both sport and arts lovers, complementing our many historic sites and stately homes. And beautiful countryside lies on the doorstep of all our major cities.
Bringing the East Midlands to life, an intriguing range of personalities and characters were born here. They include yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, footballer turned broadcaster Gary Lineker, and cultural and historic icons like Robin Hood. It's also the birthplace to world famous writers and poets like Tennyson, Dryden, Byron and Lawrence, not to mention the pioneers Sir Isaac Newton, who set down the laws of gravity, and John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
