Who qualifies for GBI ?
Most manufacturing businesses are eligible to apply, as are businesses in service sectors that supply a national rather than local market. Applicants can be companies, partnerships or sole traders. Grants are not available simply to transfer jobs from one part of the country to another.
Financial help can be used to:
- Expand, modernise or reorganise an existing business
- Upgrade your business, introducing technological or other innovatory improvements into your production or service processes
- Take a new product, service or process from the development stage to production
- Launch a new business.
Wherever your project is located or whatever the size and type of your business, a number of European restrictions apply to some sectors, such as agriculture, coal, fisheries, iron and steel, synthetic fibres and vehicles.
Restrictions may also apply where projects are in sectors of the UK market which are already fully served and where support would simply displace or reduce existing jobs in similar businesses elsewhere. Therefore, it is very important that your project involves maximising potential opportunities in niche, fast growing or export markets.
