New £190m European funding scheme launched in East Midlands
East Midlands Development Agency (emda) has this week (Wednesday 12 March 2008) officially launched the region’s new European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Competitiveness Programme for the period 2007 - 2013 at an event held in Melton Mowbray at Pera’s Innovation Centre.

‘Call for Activity’ launched – East Midlands 2007-13 ERDF Competitiveness Programme
The East Midlands 2007-13 ERDF Competitiveness Programme has officially launched the first ‘Call for Activity’ under the Programme’s Innovation and Sustainable Business Practice priority at its Programme launch event on 12 March 2008.
Programme Priority Axis 1 (PA1) seeks to create a high value-added economy by supporting innovation and sustainable business practice and will build on the region’s key strengths. This ‘Call for Activity’ invites expressions of interest from applicants that can demonstrate they can contribute significantly towards the achievement of PA1 objectives, outputs and results through eligible activities.
The associated Prospectus and Expression of Interest form are available to download at www.eastmidlandserdf.org.uk.
The deadline for Expression of Interest forms to be submitted to the Programme Secretariat under this ‘Call’ is noon on Friday, 18 April 2008. ![]()

Innovation underway with the iFestival
The region-wide innovation Festival (iFestival) runs from 7 March to 18 April 2008. Building on the success of 2007, the iFestival will encompass an inspiring programme of events, designed to help foster a culture of innovation in the region, with activity targeted at young people, businesses, communities and organisations supporting or involved within an innovation environment.
Innovation is regarded as a key driver for creating a dynamic, knowledge focused East Midlands’ economy. Improved productivity in an increasingly competitive global market means that businesses and organisations in the East Midlands must put innovation at the heart of their core activities, if they are to flourish and stay ahead of the game.
Some of the up and coming planned events include:
• iFestival Roadshow - The Shires Centre, Leicester – 15 March
• Inspiring Others is an Effective way to Grow the Business – Nottingham – 18 March

Springboard March 2008
The next Connect Midlands Springboard event will be held at The Henry Ford College in Loughborough on 18 March. The event is a half day showcase with lunch where the most exciting investment-ready technology enterprises will present to investors, high net-worth individuals and professionals who are experienced at brokering corporate finance deals.
Fifteen pre-screened developing technology companies will pitch for first stage investment of up to £500k. Each company is allowed eight minutes to present their product offering, business model, and to demonstrate how they can return a profit for investors in the audience.
Following each round of presentations, investors and companies will have ample time to network at exhibition stands and over lunch.

125 East Midlands Science and Technology Awards (EMSTA)
emda has provided £600,000 to fund “East Midlands Science and Technology Awards” (EMSTA). These awards are aimed at potential students accepted on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) full-time undergraduate degree courses in the East Midlands.
Two hundred scholarships of £3,000 (£1,000 per year for three years of undergraduate study) have been made available for students with approximately 125 scholarships available in 2008.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion
The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion, supported by emda, rewards people who have played an outstanding and significant role in promoting the growth of business enterprise and/ or entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in others.

Trade with Benelux
East Midlands International Trade Association (emita), sponsored by emda, is holding their next seminar, Begin with Benelux on Wednesday 26th March at emda’s offices at 8:30am.
Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg are all founder members of EU, with long standing trading links with UK. London 2012 Tender Opportunities
Nine tender opportunities are currently being advertised through CompeteFor to supply the 2012 Games. Two of these are for London 2012 directly and seven through the supply chain. Opportunities include the appointment of event production companies for London 2012 and cleaning and security services for one of tier one contractors for the Games.
