emda investment sparks chain of expansion for Japanese manufacturer

An international company manufacturing industrial roller chain and automotive timing systems has continued to expand its business in Nottinghamshire following a Selective Finance for Investment in England (SFIE) grant of £97,500 from East Midlands Development Agency (emda).

Tsubakimoto UK Limited, a subsidiary of Tsubakimoto Chain Company of Japan, will invest almost £700,000 over the next year, installing tensioner assembly machines at its existing factory at Sherwood Park, Annesley. This investment will further develop assembly facilities for components, which, in turn, will satisfy the local supply criteria of key customers. The new investment will create a further 6 full-time jobs.

Tsubakimoto’s decision to make this further investment in Nottinghamshire was made against strong competition from other countries within the European Union, as well as Japan.

Managing Director Bart Mellink confirmed: “The business was initially established as a UK sales and distribution facility at Sherwood Park in 2000. Since 2003, we have expanded our local production capacity reducing the need to source components from Japan. The particular project supported by SFIE grant support has provided us with greater flexibility to make direct responses to car manufacturers’ requests.”

Over the last five years, Tsubakimoto has invested substantially in assembly facilities increasing sales turnover by 275% to £24 million and doubling its workforce to 70 staff.

SFIE is a discretionary scheme delivered by the Regional Development Agencies, on behalf of the Department for Enterprise, Business and Regulatory Reform (formerly the Department of Trade and Industry). It is aimed at businesses which need financial help to invest in land and buildings or plant and machinery in order to expand and modernise.

John O’Reilly, emda’s Business Support Director said: “The East Midlands still has a significant Assisted Area around the former North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire coalfield area. Assisted Area status enables us to support large and foreign-owned businesses through the SFIE grant scheme.

“I would like to encourage these businesses, as well as small and medium sized companies across the whole of the East Midlands, that are considering investment projects, to get in touch.”

emda is looking for SFIE applications that demonstrate how companies will improve business productivity and skills levels; develop new products and processes; maximise potential opportunities in niche, fast growing or export markets; or meet the priority sectors and technologies set out in emda’s Regional Economic Strategy (RES).

The SFIE scheme criteria are straightforward and relate to location, need, the size and type of the business, the nature and size of the investment, viability, and the quality of the project.
