Shaping tourism's future
Tourism is hugely important to the region. It contributes £4.4bn to the local economy and provides jobs for around 152,000 people, with around one million trips made by overseas visitors annually.
East Midlands Tourism (EMT), emda's dedicated tourism body, is responsible for developing this key industry. It's corporate plan for 2005 to 2008 outlines key tourism targets for the region, and draws on Destination East Midlands, the region's tourism strategy.
EMT is responsible for overseeing the successful implementation of these targets as well as allocating funding and measuring success.
Promotion of the region's destinations is handled by five Destination Management Partnerships, EMT's delivery partners:
- Derbyshire & the Peak District
- Experience Nottinghamshire
- Explore Northamptonshire
- Leicester Shire Promotions
- Lincolnshire Tourism.
Establishing building blocks
Attracting more overnight visitors and improving the quality of the tourism offer are vital for the continued growth of this industry. Ambitious targets outlined for the next three years focus on marketing and quality activity and include:
- Increasing visitor spend by £230m
- The creation of 7,500 new jobs
- A doubling in the number of businesses signed up to quality assurance schemes
- The generation of 1,500 new businesses
Promoting a great offer
The region offers an eclectic mix of beautiful countryside, traditional coastal resorts, quaint market towns and vibrant cities.
There's something for everyone - meandering canals; challenging walks in breathtaking scenery; fine restaurants and gastropubs; boutique hotels; cosy bed and breakfasts; fine stately homes and castles covering hundreds of years of history; great shopping; a strong motorsports heritage, family attractions and tasty local cuisine.
