Transport and Logistics

Air FreightTransport

The East Midlands' strategic location puts it at the heart of the UK economy. The economic development of the East Midlands needs to be within the context of effective and sustainable transport and planning policies - at a local, regional and national level.

Our major cities need to be well connected, but good accessibility throughout the East Midlands and beyond is also crucial. To remain competitive our rural areas need adequate transport. Also increasingly vital for our growth is accessibility to our regional airports and the European destinations they serve.

Infrastructure

Rail: two dedicated rail freight terminals, DIRFT and Eurohub with direct connections to London and the Channel Tunnel. The West Coast, East Coast and Midland Mainline passenger lines offer rail access to most parts of the region.

Air: East Midlands Airport ( Nottingham Leicester Derby ) has the largest dedicated air freight terminal in the UK and a major international passenger service, while Robin Hood Finningley, recently opened serves the north of the region.

Sea: major North Sea ports are accessible at Humberside and Immingham, and Boston.

Road: the UK's main north-south motorways the M1 and A1(M) run through the region, and the main West Coast motorway, the M6 starts in the East Midlands.

So what are we doing?

Transport Interchanges toolkit

Recent research carried out on behalf of emda, ‘Regeneration at Transport Interchanges’ (ECOTEC, 2008) has highlighted that regeneration at transport interchanges is key to revitalising surrounding areas, improving journeys to work, creating job opportunities and attracting visitors. With the right level of investment, transport interchanges can be transformed into vibrant, economically thriving locations. This handbook draws on that research to provide information, guidance and a toolkit to demonstrate how to capture economic benefits from regeneration at transport interchanges.

Skylink

We have invested in the Skylink bus service to East Midlands Airport from Nottingham and Leicester.

This has been not only a boost for passengers wishing to leave the car at home, but also to businesses based at or near the airport that had been experiencing problems attracting employees. This scheme demonstrates how emda is working in partnership to coherently address urban regeneration, transport and planning issues.
